The two larger V8 models, the 540i and the top model E39 M5 are equipped with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. For all models apart from the 525td and 520d, an electrohydraulically controlled five-speed automatic transmission with adaptive transmission control (AGS) was available as an option. If feel like their numbers are usually a little lower than real world results, but it also depends on where you live and how you drive. Another tip is to use cruise control on the freeway/highway it will return better mpg. E39 2003 530i: SP, CWP, PP, Manual, Sunshades, Split folding rear seats, 17" Style 42s. A European Spec 530i has an electronically limited speed of 250kph. On the autobahn we drove for hours on end at speeds between 100 and 120. When we got the car back here we couldn't believe how rediculous it is to keep such a car down to 80mph.
The manuals come with a lower ratio. In which case a 3.46 bump in a manual would be fine. Our manual Z4 came with a 3.07 and we bumped her up to a 3.46 LSD and is perfect. The next step-up in ratio would be 3.64 which IMHO would be too much. The auto 530 we recently have put a 4.10 LSD in replace of the stock 3.46 drive.
The problem is the E39 530i only comes in 5 speed thereby possessing no advantage over the 5 speed auto in terms of gears. I'm not a performance driver and would love to have the ultimate cruiser. I also know through the forum that the automatic transmission in these cars have an "overdrive" gear (ratio is 0.74) whereas the performance biased
